Two chess prototypes about how pieces read on a board. The Modern Collection has three original procedural 3D sets you can switch between while a game is in progress. The courtyard edition tests whether upright pixel-art characters still read clearly on a near top-down board as they move, attack and fall.

Decisions

A weak opponent that needs nothing

The opponent makes mostly random legal moves with vendored chess.js rules instead of calling a remote AI, so the page needs no API key and loads only local files.

Fixed board, upright characters

In the courtyard the board stays fixed and the characters are 2D sprites. Combat reuses the movement patterns, so a unit steps next to its target and lunges before the target falls.
